When searching for a piece of furniture to redo, I like to head to my local Habitat for Humanity ReStore.
Thank you to Valu Home Centers for sponsoring this blog post! The opinions I shared about shopping at these locations below and using the discussed materials are my own.
It’s a place where customers can shop for quality reclaimed furniture and home items. What makes it even better is that the profits support the local Habitat for Humanity efforts! It’s a win-win situation.
After browsing ReStore for a bit, I found the furniture piece I wanted to tackle for this project. I knew I loved it moment I saw the little drawers inside. I thought it would make the perfect game table!
For this project I used:
- Krylon Chalky Finish Spray Paint
- Krylon Metallic Spray Paint in Silver (for the knobs)
- Rust-Oleum Chalkboard Finish
- Fabric
- Scissors, box cutter knife
- Adhesive and sponge applicator (Modge Podge or something similar)
- wood glue, wood filler, sand paper, screw driver
When I walk into Valu, I’m usually headed right for the paint section. It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve been there, I’m ALWAYS impressed with the amount of paint Valu has…always.
(By the way, if you haven’t seen all the new specialty paints they have these days, you must go check them out!) After I picked up a couple of cans of my spray and chalkboard paint, I was ready to head home and get started.
First, I cleaned off the table so that it was free of any dust or dirt.
After I was done admiring the photo I found in one of the drawers, I inspected the furniture to see what needed to be fixed and what hardware needed to be removed. I identified my problem areas, I applied wood filler and wood glue and let it dry. Once the wood filler was completely dry, I sanded down the respective areas so that the surface was nice and smooth and ready for paint.
Next I gave thin, even coats of the Krylon Chalky Finish Spray Paint.
If I’ve said this once, I’ve said it 1,000 times – I LOVE THIS PAINT! It goes on like a dream and dries quickly. Just follow the directions and you are golden!
Once the paint was dry, I used a foam brush to add chalkboard paint to the top of the table.
Chalkboard paint is awesome for so many different purposes and I love it for table tops because it looks sleek when nothing is written on it, and instantly transforms to fun with some chalk.
Next, I worked on sprucing up the inside of my drawers with some decorative fabric.
I simply cut my fabric to size, applied adhesive on the drawers, layered my fabric over it and put another coat of fabric on top. I let it dry overnight and cut off any excess fabric with a box cutter knife.

Once everything was dry, I assembled it back together and got right to playing some games! Its just perfect for checkers, chess, dominoes and more! The options are endless.
Have a question about this project? Just ask! And as always, remember to reclaim, reuse and upcycle! -Jackie
