One-Board Birdhouse

Avian homelessness is as prevalent as ever, and we all need to do our part!

That’s right – avian homelessness is a serious, legitimate issue.

Each day that passes, there are dozens of birds out there with no place to call home. While Valu Home Centers typically focuses on home improvement for humans, we’re going to take a moment and show you how to make an easy and effective house for your more…feathery neighbors.

All you need are a few simple supplies:

  • 1″x6″ pine board (at least 5′ long)
  • Eight 1-5/8″ deck screws
  • 2″ finishing nails
  • circular saw
  • power drill
  • spade bit (different sizes will attract different kinds of birds)

Using the full width of the 1 X 6 inch board, cut out 6 pieces. You should have a bit extra.

Drill pilot holes first!
We’re going to start by attaching the front of the birdhouse to the sides, but first we need to drill pilot holes. (Pre-drill holes to prevent the wood from splitting)

Attach the pieces with four 1-5/8-inch deck screws.

Attach the back to the sides with 2-inch finishing nails. Pre-drill the holes, making sure each one is straight.

Drill a hole in the front of your birdhouse. The size depends on what kind of bird you want to attract – use this guide for reference.

Cut about 1/2 inch off each corner of the floor for drainage.

Recess the floor 1/4 inch up from the bottom of the house, then attach it with 2-inch finishing nails from the sides and back. Do not nail the floor from the front or you won’t be able to open it for cleaning.

Now just attach the roof to the sides with 1-5/8-inch deck screws.

You’re done! Hang up your new birdhouse and watch em’ flock.

One small flap for birds, one giant swoop for bird-kind.
