Our 17th fundraising campaign to benefit The Salvation Army is on now! This year, give the gift that could save a life.
Purchase a specially marked First Alert carbon monoxide alarm, normally $29.97, but available for a discounted price of $19.97, and Valu Home Centers will donate $5 to The Salvation Army for each unit sold. 100% of these donations will go directly to help families in need in your community, and all funds raised will stay with the local Salvation Army in the neighborhood where they were collected so you give where you live. Since 2001, Valu Home Centers has donated more than $760,000 to The Salvation Army.
$5 from each sale of a specific First Alert carbon monoxide alarm will be donated back to The Salvation Army to support their programs in the communities where they were purchased.
The Salvation Army helps families with recreational, spiritual, educational, and social programs to assist those in need. Salvation Army programs are open to people of all ages and are focused on building character, confidence, and capacity for excellence within under-served communities. From emergency disaster relief to veterans affairs, to housing and homeless services, The Salvation Army provides a wide range of critical services. Valu Home Centers proudly covers all of the administrative costs for this campaign, so 100% of your donation will be received by your local Salvation Army affiliate.
Why give a carbon monoxide alarm as a gift?
Did you know that CO detectors have a life span? Did you know that CO detectors should have their batteries tested at least twice each year? How about carbon monoxide itself, did you know that it is colorless, odorless, and nearly impossible to sense without the help of a detector? There are so many great reasons to ensure that your loved ones are protected from the harmful side effects of carbon monoxide poisoning with a working alarm in their home. Since the 10-year sealed Universal Security carbon monoxide alarm has 10-year battery and does not need to be plugged in, it’s great to take with you when you travel, or send with the kids to a sleepover for added safety.
EMS Chief and Volunteer Firefighter, Michael Krupski, reminds families “CO detectors do malfunction from time to time, and go off when there is no true CO leak in your home. While that may result in the feeling of “I brought the whole fire department out here for nothing” when a detector is going off, every firefighter would agree that they would rather give your home a quick sweep, than respond to a home when it is too late.”
What does your $5 donation mean for local families?
This has been an eventful year with multiple natural disasters around the country that require funds and services from The Salvation Army, so the need here at home is greater than ever. The Salvation Army provides a wide range of important services for various difficult scenarios that families in our own neighborhoods face every day. Here is a story of one family who stayed at a Salvation Army shelter for homeless families in Buffalo, NY:
“After a turbulent divorce following years of physical abuse, Jan and her young sons were forced to find shelter. They arrived at The Salvation Army’s shelter for homeless families and found a warm welcome. “I arrived to a clean lobby with families playing in the outdoor playground. We were blessed to eat, sleep, and search for housing without feeling taunted to leave. We were treated like loved and respected people.” Jan received counseling in resolving her housing and financial needs and she found a permanent home in which to live. “As we move into our new family home in an even better neighborhood than before, I will prepare to reach back and be a blessing to a facility that has done the same for my family and many families to come!’”

How else can you get involved with The Salvation Army?
In order to carry out their work, The Salvation Army depends on the support of our community. There are a variety of ways you can partner with The Salvation Army to change lives, including:
- Volunteer (More information on volunteer opportunities here)
- Donate gently-used housewares and clothing
- Give a monetary gift
- Sponsor a family during the Christmas season
- Become a Bell Ringer or sponsor a Red Kettle
Nearly 30 million Americans receive assistance from The Salvation Army each year through the broadest array of social services that range from providing food for the hungry, relief for disaster victims, assistance for the disabled, outreach to the elderly and ill, clothing and shelter to the homeless and opportunities for underprivileged children. 82 cents of every dollar spent is used to support those services, so a large database of volunteers is critical to the success of their programs.
Thank you for your continued support!
