DIY Decorative Bottle Lamp

This quick, easy DIY lamp tutorial makes a great, unique gift for that hard-to-buy-for person on your list.

With just a few inexpensive supplies from your neighborhood Valu Home Center, you can create a one-of-a-kind gift to give, or keep for yourself! Don't worry, we won't tell.

To make your own bottle lamp, you will need:

  • A glass bottle
  • 5/16" glass and tile drill bit
  • 3/8" drill bit
  • Spray bottle with water
  • Drill
  • 1/8" - " threaded nipple
  • 1/8" nut
  • Push switch lamp-holder (socket)
  • 6' Household extension cord
  • New or old (rusted) bolts/washers/nuts or your choice of a bottle filler
  • Lamp shade
  • Krylon ColorMaster Metallic Spray Paint in Chrome (or color of your choice)
  • 60 Watt LED Philips light bulb

Step 1

Use the 5/16" glass and tile drill bit to drill a hole in the back of the bottle. While drilling, apply water to the area being drilled to prevent the bit from heating up. Safety glasses are a must when drilling glass.

Step 2

If you're using rusty pieces of hardware, spray paint them to give them a fresh look. Be sure to allow for the appropriate drying time noted on the back of your can!

Step 3

While your hardware is drying, cut the female end off of the household extension cord and feed it from the bottom up through the top of the bottle.

Step 4

Drill a 3/8" hole into the cap of the bottle. Push through the 1/8" threaded nipple and screw the nut on from underneath the cap. Leave about 5-6 threads sticking out top of the cap.

Step 5

After running the cord through the bottle, leave about 3" hanging out of the of the bottle, and begin to fill the bottle with the hardware. Tip - try to keep the cord in the center of the bottle to allow it not to be visible once the bottle is filled. It can easily be done when filling by lightly shaking the bottle to put the hardware in place. Fill the bottle only leaving about 1/2" of space at the mouth of the bottle.

Step 6

Run the cord through the nipple that is attached to the cap, and again leave about 3" out the top. Go ahead and screw the top on to the bottle. Tip - while screwing the top on, hold the wire in place so that it does not twist.

Step 7

Screw the socket base including:

  1. The base
  2. The cardboard insulator
  3. The socket
  4. The cover to the exposed thread on the cap.

Step 8

Strip the 2 wires (about 3/4") and connect them to the socket. Once complete, go ahead and finish putting the lamp-holder together. Tip: Be sure to use the cardboard insulator - without this it will cause a spark!

Step 9

Place the lamp shade on and insert you Philips LED light bulb, and you're all done!
