Spring Lawn Cleanup Tips From Scotts

Spring is finally upon us!

There are a few steps you can take throughout the Spring season to get your lawn looking great for the Summer ahead. Check out these great tips from Scotts, a lawn care brand trusted by do-it-yourselfers everywhere.

Early Spring

  • Get your lawn mower ready.
Tune up and clean up your mower. Change the oil. Sharpen the blade. Lubricate moving parts. Install a new spark plug. Clean off old dirt, clippings and spills.
  • Clean up leaves, branches and twigs.
Pick up any remnants from winter storms. Dispose of debris properly, according to local regulations.
  • Thwart weeds.
Apply a pre-emergent weed control to prevent crabgrass in the North or post-emergent weed control to stop dollarweed in the South.
  • Mow high.
Set your mower at the right height for your grass type. Mowing as high as possible encourages a thick, full lawn.

Late Spring

  • Repair bare areas.
Fix patchy places with spot seeding, making sure to water daily for at least a week.
  • Seed to thicken.
Healthy turf crowds out weeds, so apply a high-quality seed along with a Starter® lawn food. Wait until the new grass plants are at least 2 inches tall before mowing.
  • Kill dandelions.
Don’t even try to pull or dig ’em – spot treat dandelions instead.
  • Control grubs.
Apply Scotts® GrubEx®1 now to stop grubs as they hatch. Controls all season.
  • Edge and mulch.
Use a shovel to cut a clean edge between landscape beds and lawn. Then add 3 inches of mulch to finish the look and to block weeds’ access to sunlight
