Choosing the Right Cleaning Product:

The condition of your deck will determine the type of cleaning products you need.

Use a deck stain stripper on all exterior wood that has been previously treated or stained. This will remove any type of stain, paint or varnish completely stripping the entire surface. Apply with a roller or brush, let sit 3-40 minutes, and spray clean with a garden hose. Repeat if necessary.

Deck cleaner is intended for older decks and is a great maintenance cleaner. It removes any oxidation, dirt, algae, mold or mildew and helps prepare the wood surface for the next stain or coating application. Apply with a pump-up sprayer and let sit for 15-20 minutes. Spray clean with a garden hose and use a brush to scrub out any areas with heavy dirt or mildew.

Choosing the Right Deck Stain:

The type of stain you choose depends on the appearance and durability you want to achieve.

Transparent Stains provide a light color that highlights wood grain and provides good durability.

Semi-Transparent Stains provide very good durability as well as a rich, pigmented color that allows moderate hide while enabling the natural wood grain to show through.

Solid Color Stains help cover up wood blemishes or unsightly grain while offering maximum durability with opaque opacity.

Prepping Your Space:

Inadequate prep is the most common reason for deck stain failure. Set your deck up for success with these deck prep guidelines.

Follow these guidelines to prepare for applying stains. Make sure the surface is clean (no dust, dirt, wood fibers or grease), dry and free from mildew. When a surface is not cleaned and prepared properly, the coating and project are at risk to fail.

  • Thoroughly sweep the deck to remove debris.
  • Liberally apply cleaner using a roller or pump sprayer (wear protective equipment to avoid contact with skin and eyes).
  • Allow the cleaner to set for 15 minutes. Mist your work area with a garden hose to keep it wet while the cleaner soaks into the wood.
  • After 15 minutes, work the cleaner into the surface using a stiff synthetic-bristle brush. Scrub to remove residue thoroughly.
  • Use a garden hose to completely rinse the cleaner from the wood.
  • You may apply stain or coating once the surface is clean, dull and dry.

Applying Deck Stain is Easy With Help From Superdeck®

Follow these steps to protect your outdoor living space while enhancing the beauty.

  • Ensure your deck has been cleaned properly. Before applying stain, sprinkle some water on the deck. If the droplets sink in, the wood is ready-to-be stained.
  • Get easy application and the highest quality results with Purdy application tools. Working with the wood grain, apply an even coat of stain using a 4-inch brush. You may also use a roller to first apply the stain, and then work into the wood with your brush.
  • Always read the product data guide. This guide provides complete product details and instructions. The Product Data Guide can be found online at superdeck.com
  • For best results, avoid staining at midday or in direct sunlight.
  • Depending on temperature and humidity, allow 24 – 48 hours of dry time before using your beautifully stained deck.
