A new tagline! Have you noticed? Some of you may recognize this phrase from our early days of advertising ~and~ some of you may be seeing it for the first time. This is our way of nodding to the past by providing our long-time customers some nostalgia. We’re also serving our new customers a clear, succinct idea of what we stand for.

50 Years of DIY, One Project at a Time

Inspiration for the “new new” (& a little history).
The DIY movement began long before Valu became established, but picked up some momentum in the late ’60s and early ’70s, around the time Valu was introduced to WNY neighborhoods. DIY spread through the North American population of college- and recent-college-graduate age groups. In part, this movement involved the renovation of affordable, rundown older homes, but it also related to various projects expressing the social and environmental vision of the 1960s and early 1970s. DIY books and VHS’ tapes ~what are those?~ were on the rise and inspired many to get their projects going. No doubt – the trend of the times called for Valu to serve its community.
The DIY movement is still going strong today. With an emphasis on sustainability and repurposing, and the availability of online resources, DIY has become easier and even more popular. Social channels like Pinterest and Instagram make it easy to get inspired and share #myValu #ValuHomeCenters #hashtag. And if you’ve noticed by the way we’ve been using the term, DIY is a versatile word. Use it as a noun, a verb, an adjective! It’s a universal term that has spread like wildfire.

At the core of what we do, it’s all about DIY. It’s always been more about helping you DIY, than selling product; if we can provide you with quality product and the inspiration, know-how, and positivity you need to complete a project, we have succeeded.

The nitty gritty.
The graphic treatment was initially sketched in various forms of a speech bubble to communicate the personalization of our customer experience. We want our customers to feel special, noticed and taken care of and that starts with a conversation. The corners of the speech box are rounded to reflect the forms in our main logo. Lowercase was used to give a sense of informality and approachability.
As we look back on what we’ve accomplished and envision the future of our brand, we hope that our message of “you can do it” stays clear. Our team of dedicated associates works tirelessly to provide our visitors with memorable experiences, and with DIY knowledge that they can take home and pass on. Consider it complimentary DIY expertise – free with each visit to our store!
We hope that this simple phrase provides our audience some empowerment to make, build and do.
